A model science laboratory for hands-on, technology-enabled learning — and a STEM team that takes it to schools across Leh district.
The Model Science Laboratory at DIET Leh promotes scientific inquiry, creativity and critical thinking among students and teachers. Set up in line with the National Education Policy 2020, it lets learners work through concepts by doing — hands-on activities, experiments and technology-enabled learning.
The lab is equipped with scientific apparatus, experiment kits, a smart TV, Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) learning systems and an astronomical telescope. It works as a demonstration centre: students and teachers from schools across Ladakh visit for interactive science sessions, experiments and technology-based learning, and teachers see activity-based methods they can take back to their own classrooms.
The lab's astronomical telescope introduces students to astronomy and space science. In guided observation sessions, learners observe the Moon, planets, stars and other celestial objects, and meet ideas from astronomy, optics and space exploration through direct observation.
AR overlays digital information on real objects; VR places learners in simulated environments. Together they let students run virtual experiments, explore the human body, travel through the solar system and examine scientific models that are hard to picture from a textbook alone.

Launched in 2026, the Mobile STEM Bus is a travelling laboratory that takes the lab's approach to schools across Ladakh, including remote and hard-to-reach areas. It carries experiment kits, mathematics learning aids, AR/VR modules and an astronomical telescope, so students can see, handle and test ideas otherwise met only in textbooks.
DIET Leh's STEM team has visited schools regularly over several months. Each visit is built around learning by doing: an activity often opens with a simple question or a surprising demonstration, and students observe, predict, experiment and reason their way to an explanation — covering force and motion, pressure, density, electricity, magnetism, chemical reactions, air pressure and surface tension, mostly with everyday materials. Visits also include AR/VR sessions, STEM quizzes and challenges, and conversations with teachers on STEM pedagogy.
The team reports high curiosity and engagement among students, strong interest in the AR/VR and telescope sessions, and appreciation from teachers for the approaches demonstrated. Because visits recur, students increasingly move from asking “what happens?” to “why does it happen?” and “what if we try it differently?”
